01 KingMaker

Tabletop AR Board Game

Kingmaker was my senior capstone project for my last semester at CU Boulder’s B.S. in Creative Technology and Design. Working with Ethan Cuenca as my partner we created a tabletop game with the goal of encouraging civic discussion between players from high school through their early 20s.

Are you a college student? Does talking about politics give you a sense of existential or social dread? Do you avoid talking about politics because of the anxiety it causes you? We both know that politics and civics in general are important, they touch every part of our lives after all, but how do we talk about it? So enter KingMaker, a debate style board game that incorporates AR that was created for just that. Games are disarming, fun, and a great way to start a conversation for young audiences. In this game, play as a crab competing through a series of civic-based debates from the crab kingdom of Crustacea in order to win the race for King Crab.

02 Product Design

For this project I was in charge of all product design required to create a fully functional board game. This included the box’s packaging design as well as the cards, tokens, and any rules. As the person in charge of graphic and product design I also wrote all of the game’s copy of the packaging and in the rule book.

Within the box, there was also an insert that held all of the game’s assets. I was in charge of 3D modeling and printing this insert that went though multiple iterations before being finalized.

In order to create a functioning game that is not just educational but also fun, the game design and game play went through multiple iterations with lots of play testing throughout. Above are multiple iterations of not just the graphic design of the box but also the game play and product design. Iterations were made with easy to access materials in order to complete and test as many versions as possible within the time constraints.
